Human life is a full of risk. The effective solution of reducing the burden of these risks/losses is insurance. Insurance occupies an important position in the financial sector of an economy. In a period of less than half a century the insurance sector in a country has come in a full circle from being an open competitive market to compete nationalisation and then back to a liberalized market. The entry of private player's in the Indian insurance market has change the nature of competition. But LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India) continuous to be the dominant life insurer even in the liberalized scenario of Indian insurance and it moving fact on a new growth trajectory surpassing its own past records. Insurance Regulatory and development Authority (IRDA) has been established to protect the interests of holders of insurance policy and to regulate, promote and insure growth of the insurance industry.

The purpose of this book is three fold- (a) to explain overiew of the insurance sector (b) to evaluate the financial performance of LIC (c) to evaluate the business performance of LIC.

This book traces the structure of insurance sector in India, explains the legal framework, discusses the various plans of LIC and describes the performance of LIC in India and out side India.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Harish M. Chandarana

Dr. Harish M. Chandaran is M.Com, M.Phil, Ph.D. At present he is Head of Commerce Department at Shri H.N. Doshi Arts & R.N. Doshi Commerce College, Wankaner (Gujarat). He has 15 years of teaching experiences at U.G. level and 8 years at P.G.level for dM.Com. he is also a visiting faculty at Department of Commerce & Business Adminictration, Saurashtra University, Rajkot. He is a member of Board of Studies in Commerce, Saurashtra University. He is Executive Member of Indian Accounting Association, Saurashtra Branch. He has contributed a number of research papers in several National and International conferences. His paper on 'Micro Insurance – Reducing the vulnerabilities of the poor" has been awarded the "out standing research paper" in International Conference on "Micro Finance" held by Pondicherry Univeristy on 21-23, January 2009. He has written two books i.e. Personality Development and Introduction to VAT. His areas of interest are Taxation, Insurance, Marketing Management and Finance.
