International Environmental Laws have occupied the centre-stage among all efforts towards global environmental protection and conservation. Regulating the anti-environmental activities and any further depletion of natural resource base has been the corner-stone for future legislations. During the 1980s and early 1990s such efforts attracted global attention, culminating in the signing and enforcement of Rio Declarations and related conventions. In the light of such important developments, the covenant conventions previously signed also regained their importance. Legal bodies and law departments all over the world incorporated the study and implementation of environmental legislations among their agenda for action. Conventions like CITES, convention on biological diversity, framework convention on climate change, ozone protocols came into force. It was realised for the first time that how much needs to be done for implementing such legislations and the way different governments have to work out jointly towards realising a greener and safer world. This encyclopaedia of environmental laws has been compiled with a vision of helping the decision-makers, NGOs, government bureaucrats, industrialists and all others concerned with related activities. The fifteen volumes divided year wise from 1933-1992 and then thematically like basic laws, forests, wildlife, land and freshwater, marine water, air, toxic and hazardous material, nuclear and global commons give a complete reference to a reader, also providing the selective approach for locating the required law. The main aim of preparing these volumes is present a complete text dealing with environmental laws at global level so that developments at national level in environmental legislation could be worked out accordingly. Such a knowledge base could be very helpful in cross referring the legislations and to pursue a balanced approach towards sustainable development at global, regional and local levels. The present exercise of defining the basic contours and substance of environmental law is holistic in nature and probably it is first of its kind.
