Being Volume VIII of the Series International Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature (Volume I dealing with the literature of Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit & Apabhramsa, 1987, Vols. II, III, IV, V, VI & VII covering Tamil, Assamese, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Urdu respectively), the present volume on Sindhi offers articles on all important poets, dramatists, fiction writers, essayists and critics and their important works from the beginning of Sindhi literature down to the present times. The entries are arranged alphabetically. Generally articles on Indian writers go with their Christian names, but there are cross references under their surnames. This would enable one to locate the writers easily. The articles have been compiled and updated with active and close assistance of Professor G. A. Allana of the University of Sind, Pakistan and Dr. M.K. Jetley, Head of the Sindhi Section, Department of Modern Indian Languages, University of Delhi. For non-Sindhi readers and for those who want to have a bird’s eye-view of Sindhi literature, a Survey has been prepared by Dr. M.K. Jetley. This has been placed in the beginning of the Volume. The first work of its kind in English about Sindhi literature, it should serve the purpose of a handy reference tool. It should prove quite useful where Sindhi is studied as also where there is a comparative study of modern Indian languages. It also serves the purpose of those non-Sindhi scholars, who happen to come across names of Sindhi writers and their works.
