This book is an attempt to provide the reader an understanding of the nature and character of iron metal-lurgy of early Historic Gujarat. An interdisciplinary study of stratified iron objects from various archeological excavations and explorations has been attempted here. The present work incorporates analysis and evaluation of the chemical composition of iron objects Historic sites of nagara, Shamalaji, Devnimori and Timberva with a view to understanding the nature of iron in terms of purity and alloying elements. The iron objects revered from these sites were studied with special emphasis on processes of manufacture and methods of fabrication to trace the developmental stages in the production technology with the help of metallographic micro-structural features. The study also aims at the classification of object types from various sites and their distribution. Along with excavated archeological specimens, ethnographic samples were also analyzed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ambika B. Patel

Ambika B. Patel is Lecturer/ Curator in the department of Archeology and Ancient History, the maharaja Sayairao university of Baroda, Vadodara. She received her BSC (Chemistry) from university of kerala, BED (Science and Mathematics), MA (Archeology and Ancient History) from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara. She is the recipient of Sankalia Young Archeologist Award for the year 2002. She has also received Small Scale research Grant Award (India) from Nehru trust for Indian Collections at Victoria and Albert Museum, New Delhi, for the years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. She has participated in many excavations and exploration and is a member of various professional bodies and organizations. She has published and presented many papers on various themes of archeology, metallurgy, conservation and heritage tourism.
