ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nejatullah Siddiqi

Dr. M. Nejatullah Siddiqi (b. 1931) is a highly respected authority in the area of Islamic Economics. King Faisal Laureate (1982), academic excellence is the hall-mark of Dr. Siddiqi’s career. He is an outstanding representative of a tradition which blends extraordinarily the Madras and Western types of educatioin. After pre-university education he studied at Sanavi Darsgah Jamat-e-Islami Hind (now closed) and at Madrasa of Islah, Saraimir, Azamgarh. He did B.A. securing First Rank in alighar Muslim University [A.M.U.], M.A. (Economics) with First Position in the Faculty of Arts [A.M.U.] amd Ph.D. in Economics [A.M.U.] in the year 1966. Presently working as Professor of Economics, King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah, Dr. Siddiqi started his teaching career as an assistant professor in Economics Department of A.M.U. in the year 1961. He also served as Professor of Islamic Studies, A.M.U. (1977-83). Started contributing articles from 1948 onwards, Dr. Siddiqi has to his credit 13 books in English, 10 boks in Urdu and more than 40 research papers published in journals of international repute. Dr.Siddiqi has done pioneering work in presenting a workable model of interest free banking. He is considered as an authority on Islamic Economic thought and his contribution to other branches of Islamic Economics is also phenomenal. Some of his works are translated in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Indonesian, Malay and Bengali langgauges. Dr. Siddiqi served as Editor of Islamic Thought (1954-1959) and the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences (AAMSS IIIT) (1985-1991). Currently he is on the editorial board of several resear5ch journals including Journals of King Abdul Aziz University: Islamic economics; Review of Islamic Economics (Leicester U.K.), Islamic Economic Studies (Jeddah) and Humanomics (Toronto Canada), etc.
