Journey to the Centre of the Earth is an adaptation from the French novel Voyage au centre de la Terre published in 1864. It is the second in the popular science fiction series Voyages extraordinaires. An impetuous German professor, Otto Lidenbrock, discovers an encoded manuscript wherein is mentioned the passageway to the centre of the earth. Otto prepares a roller-coaster expedition on the basis of the same and is accompanied by his faithful nephew, Axel, and his stoic Icelandic guide, Hans. The many months they spend in the underground world of luminous rocks, antediluvian forests, and fantastic sea creatures and their final resurfacing leave an indelible mark on the minds of the reader.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jules Verne

JULES VERNE (1828-1905) was a French author whose writing shaped the development of modern science fiction. After studying law he chose to follow his interest in literature. In 1863 Verne published the first of his Voyages extraordinaires - Cinq semaines en balloon (Five Weeks in a Balloon). Verne's novels were immensely popular throughout the world, the most famous being, Around the World in Eighty days.
