A lot of work has been done in recent years on various aspects of the economy of Mughal India. While providing an overall view of the socio-economic structure of Mughal India, these studies tell little about the labour, which formed the largest segment of society. In this context, the study of labour, reported in the present book, opens up an hitherto unexplored field of historical importance. In the light of available material, an attempt has been made to examine the forces that influenced the working and living conditions of labour in Mughal India.
