They influence significantly the lifestyle and livelihood of the community, which lives in and around the lakes and wetlands. Over 200 rivers and lakes in the world are shared by two or more countries. This envisages their international importance.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Pratap K. Mohanty

Dr. Pratap K. Mohanty, Reader in the Department of Marine Sciences, Berhampur University, Orissa, obtained his PhD degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. His research interests include Monsoon Studies, Coastal Oceanographic Process Studies and Studies on Extreme Weather Events. He has published more than 20 referred papers in reputed journals and presented papers in conferences organised in India and abroad. Dr. Mohanty has been a Commonwealth Fellow and worked at University of reading, UK and has been a visiting academic to the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, University of Cambridge, UK; Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Plymouth, U.K; Ocean research Institute, University of Tokyo, Japan; CSIRO, Aspendale, Australia; Environment B.O.P, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, New Zeeland, etc.
