This small volume contains two works on the Vinaya, or system of self-discipline, which is considered very important within all the Dharma tradition of Tibet. These texts focus on the Vinaya as it is taught to young novice minks: the first work is Nagarjuna’s Stanzas for a Novice Monks, presented with a commentary by the 19th century Nyingma lama, Jamyang, Mipam Rinpoche. The second work in this volume is the Essence of the Ocean of Vinaya, composed by the 14th-century lama, Je Tsong Khapa, concerning the eight fundamental categories of pratimoksha vows. Although both of these text sere primarily composed for ordained members of the Sangha, they contain wisdom and advice of benefit to all those interested in the Buddhadharm and Tibetan culture.

Glenn H. Mullin is an internationally renowned author and Tibetologist. He is author of a dozen books on Tibetan Buddhism including Death and Dying: The Tibetan Tradition. He has produced and worked on various Tibet-related film and television programs.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lobsang Rapgay

Lobsang Rapgay, Ph.D., trained as a Buddhist monk, studied Tibetan medicine, and in 1978 became a deputy secretary for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He now works as a psychologist at UCLA and as a lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Rapgay is the author of several books, including Health for Life. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
