Lean manufacturing: Perspectives and Applications

Management strategies and philosophies are always difficult and uncertain, especially for manufacturing and service sector companies, because change is inevitable and the companies should adopt it as per the customer’s requirement. It is necessary for every organization to rethink their strategies and embark on a new path by adopting and implementing the new philosophies like lean. Lean is based on the logic that nothing will be produced until it is needed. The fundamental rule of lean is ‘to simplify the processes and use less to do more’. The companies that have fully implemented the lean system’s approach are rare, but the list of the companies (both manufacturing and service sector) trying to adopt and become lean is growing fast. Toyota Production System is the pioneer to start the lean production. The objective of this lean system is to minimize the consumption of resources that adds no value to the product. This book ‘Lean Manufacturing: Perspectives and Applications’ presents the concept of lean systems in manufacturing sectors to make the workplace more effective. The book is divided into two sections. The first section is – Introduction and Concepts – which explains the introduction of lean in the production environment and the conceptual explanation of lean. The second section is – Applications and Cases – which describes the situations where the lean concepts can be applicable. To substantiate that, a couple of cases are also added, to help the reader have a thorough understanding of the subject.
