This implies the survival for the same period of time of the physical medium which contains that information, whether it is a manuscript, a printed book, a videotape or a floppy disk. The automation of library operations can very readily be regarded as a way of escape from the pressing problems of everyday life in a library, ordering and cataloguing books, answering awkward reference questions, tracing lost books.
