Richard C. Nicholson's translation of Rene Guenon's Man and His Becoming is an exposition of the 'nature and constitution of the human being' in the light of the doctrines of Vedanta which echoes the Upanishadic message, 'there traditional views like Nyaya, Vaisesika, Sankhya, Yoga and Mimamsa are referred to wherever necessary. The book opens with a broad outline of Vedanta and then passes on to a thorough discussion of other relevant topics such as, Prakriti and Purusha, atma (personality), buddhi (intellect), manas (mind), kosha (wraps), sukshma (subtle) and sthula (gross) forms, stages of the atman like alertness, dream and slumber and finally concludes with three essays on moksha (final release). All those interested in Hindu philosophy shall find this book instructive and absorbing; for nowhere else shall they find this abstract subject treated in so compact, yet clear, manner.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rene Guenon

Rene Guenon (1886-1951) is without doubt one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Frithjof Schuon has said of him that he had the central function of restoring the great principles of traditional metaphysics to Western awareness and he added that Guenon gave proof of a universality of understanding that for centuries had no parallel in the Western world.
