The focuses specifically on regional strategies and cooperation regarding environmental matters which are pursued actively within the economic commission for Europe, one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. Membership consists of 34 countries comprising all the market-economy countries of both Europe and North America as well as the European centrally planned economy countries. Indeed, for over 40 years the commission has served as a unique forum for east-west cooperation, among others in the field of environment.
