The concept of IPM has been developed to cope up with the diversity and complexity of pest problems which limit the production as well as the quality of produce. The horticultural crops are very important diversified group of crops which are susceptible to a large number of insects causing reduction in yield. In traditional agriculture, the insect pests were kept under check by various cultural and mechanical approaches; while modern agriculture, relies upon the use of synthetic organic insecticides which has resulted in aggravated resistance and environmental problems. Besides providing background information for the important insect pests of vegetables, fruits and ornamental plants, this book discusses in detail about the insect pests behaviour, nature and symptoms of attack, host range and utilization of cultural, biological, chemical, biorational and other innovative approaches in an integrated way so as to manage them in a sustainable eco-safe manner. The book will also be useful in providing valuable information to be implemented at the farmer’s level. It also provides comprehensive information for teachers, researchers and extension personnel engaged in designing and implementation of IPM programme for horticultural crops.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR H C L Gupta
Dr. H.C. L. Gupta (b. 1948) was professor & Head, Department of Entomology (1996-2002) and Zonal Director Research University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur. Presently he is working as Director, Planning and Monitoring MPUAT, Udaipur. He possesses 35 years research, teaching and extension experience in the field of Insect Toxicology, Residues, Applied Entomology and Insect Pest Management. He was Principal Investigator of several projects financed by ICAR, PL-480 and Private Agencies. He is author of 3 books, more than 150 research papers in National and international Journals and several popular articles in different magazines. He is a fellow of Entomological society of India and President of Udaipur branch and also fellow and President of the Entomological Research Association, Udaipur.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR O.P. Ameta
Dr. O.P. Ameta (b. 1958) is working as Associate Professor (Insect Toxicology) in MPUAT, Udaipur. He has published several research papers in reputed national journal. He is Principal Investigator of Private funded projects on testing of pesticidal molecules in vegetables. He is actively involved in projects related to IPM funded by ICAR and Directorate of Aarecanut and Spices, Kalukut. He is recipient of University Best Teacher Award 2004.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR V.K. Chechani
Dr. Vikjas Chechani did his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Entomology with specialization in Insect Toxicology with gold medal. He has worked as Senior research fellow in the project entitled “Bioefficacy and Residues of Pesticides†during 2001-2003 and thereafter joined P.I. Industries. He has published 20 research papers in 15 popular articles.
