Soil is a wonderful gift of nature to humankind, but limited, non-renewable and non elastic resource. Past decades witnessed a considerable shrinkage in the soil due to unscrupulous increase in the urbanization and industrialization. Agricultural technologies that led to Green Revolution resulted in the degradation of this precious natural resource owing to over exploitation under intensive farming coupled with mis-management. The soil quality has under gone as serious damage leading to a decline in crop production and factor productivity. In the present book, entitled "Management Soil Quality for Sustainable Agriculture", an attempt has been made to compile the information on concept and indicators of soil quality and its relevance in sustainable crop production. The book also embodies information on improving various parameters of soil quality. Few pages in the book on methods for assessing physical, chemical and biological parameters of oil quality will be helpful in monitoring the status of soil health. The chapters in the book have been contributed by eminent scientists engaged in basic and applied research of Soil Science. The book will be very useful to the scientists engaged in soil and crop production research, extension workers, students and farmers.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ramesh Chandra
Dr. Ramesh Chandra is currently Principal Scientist & Head. Crop Improvement & Production Division at Central Institute for Sub Tropical Horticulture, Lucknow. He has over 30 years of experience in micropropagation, in vitro conservation & molecular biology of potato, mango, guava, papaya, litchi etc. he was instrumental in initiating & shaping potato biotechnology at Central Potato Research Institute. Shimla and initiated biotechnology research at CISH, Lucknow. Dr. Chandra has undergone tissue culture and molecular biology training at Peru, Phillippines and China as visiting scientist. He worked with John Dodds, Tissue Culture Specialist of International Potato Centre, Lima, Peru on potato micropropagation and in vitro germplasm management. He has almost 125 research publications including a book on Comprehensive Potato Biotechnology to his credit. Dr. Chandra has traveled widely and participated in various national and international conference. He is a life member of many scientific societies and fellow of Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding. He has successfully completed research projects funded by DBT, UPDASP, NATP and running five research projects funded by different agencies.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR S K Singh
Dr. S.K. Singh is PhD. In Zoology from Patna university, Patna and is presently working as professor & head, department of Wildlife Management, faculty of Forestry, Birsa Agricultural university, Kanke, Panchi. He has been associated with forestry teaching since 1983. Dr. Singh obtained a Diploma-in-Forestry from F.R.I. & Colleges, Dehradun. He made a one year academic visit to the U.S.A. as Visiting Professor in Forestry and was also trained in the field of Agroforestry at Costa Rica. He has also written a book entitled "Textbook of Wildlife management" which is very popular amongst student community.
