This book a compilation of some published (Semi) official reports and documents. It is aimed at re-constructing and re-examining of the subaltern classes of East Bengal in the late nineteenth century. The term 'subaltern' has been used in this book for the lowest strata of rural gentry. Information on the subalterns of the nineteenth century is particularly scarce and its quality is often very poor. It is due to the paucity of materials that prevented the scholars from carrying any study on the subalterns of nineteenth century Bengal. The nineteenth century official reports, accounts and monographs despite various inherent weaknesses provide us with an understanding of the subalterns in that period. But they are not easily available to the researchers.
