This book is organised in such a way that it will be useful to everyone interested in the world of plants particularly those increasing number of people who are concerned with medicinal plants. Many of this valuable and useful group of plants are threatened with extinction, because of over exploitation and habitat destruction. The author’s endeavour here is to make people aware of the potential of medicinal plants from all angles so that these life saving plants can be protected from total destruction. There is a need to identify the natural plant wealth and commercially viable species in each agro-climatic zones, promote industries to produce phyto-chemicals, standardize the agro-techniques for cultivation and production of these plants particularly in forests waste lands and orchards as an additional income generating activity and also strengthen the research and developmental activity for evolving new herbal products and their production technology. In this book more than 800 genera are discussed covering nearly 1257 species. Almost all commercially important medicinal plants cultivated in, different part of the world has found a place in this publication. An integrated and comprehensive account of all related aspects of the subject such as nomenclature, description, distribution, cultivation, processing, physical and chemical properties of large selection of plants have been incorporated. However, the author would like to mention here that many of the plants are poisonous in the unprocessed form and self medication with wild plants is not all advisable. Some of the information furnished here are yet to be proved scientifically. For treating any ailments, the plant drug should be administered only with the prescription of a registered medical practitioner. The information furnished in this book will make it easier to identity the medicinal plants and make their growing more thorough and satisfying.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR M P Singh

Dr. M.P. Singh, Head of the Department of Forest Sciences, Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi (Jharkhand) earned his mater's degree in Botany with specialization in Taxonomy and after his PH.D degree in Floristic from Patna University and Diploma in Forestry from Forest Research Institute, Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education, Dehradun. He is a fellow in Life Sciences of Mendelian Society of India, Patna. Besides teaching Dr. Singh has been engaged with independent research in Project of Government of India as Principal investigator. He is noted Taxonomist of the country and have about twenty one years of long experiences. He is an advisor to the Government of India for whole Eastern Region on Horistic research and member of FLORA INDIA. He is the Editor of Journal "New Botanist" for forestry sector. He has published eight books in Botany, Forestry and on Environmental Sciences and also published eighty five research papers in National/International Journals. He has also guided a number of Scholar for award of Ph. D. degree in Botany as well as in Forestry. He is one of the member of Botanical Survey of India in a Research Selection Committee. He has extensively travelled in India and abroad in conection to floristic studies.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Narendra Prasad

Dr. Narendra Prasad is at present Professor in the University Department of Economics, Magadh University, Bodh Gaya, Bihar. He has written three books, edited three books and contributed about fifty articles for various journals and conferences. Dr. Prasad is a life member of IEA, ISLE and EAB. Presently he is treasurer of Economic Association of Bihar. He has guided a number of research students for Ph. D. degree and conducted three research projects sponsored by UGC. He has attended Summer Institute in Economics and Statistics in 1977, and completed courses on Research Methodology in Economics at ANSISS, Patna in 1986.
