History is the mirror of the past and inscriptions are one of the best medium to reflect the past in it. Engraved and scratched hard objects with all components like script, contents and used object for engraving are called ‘Inscriptions’ and discipline of the composite studies of all these subjects is called ‘Epigraphy’. Decipherment of inscribed script & historical explanations of deciphered contents has long procedure and its own special methods. These had been many changes and improvements in epigraphical studies to make it more and more useful in history writing. Due to their utility in explaining historical perspectives epigraphs and epigraphical studies are very popular discipline of study among historians. Therefore, to discuss the trends and methodology of epigraphical studies, survey, preservation, nature and typology of inscriptions, limitations and problems of epigraphs and epigraphical studies in the light of other sources of history, and to evaluate the epigraphical evidences as a source of different perspectives of history etc., a national seminar entitled, ‘Methods of Epigraphical Studies and History writing’, was organized. This book is divided into two volumes, i.e., I in English and II in Hindi is the published form of the presented papers in the same. There are 20 research papers with presidential address in volume I and 28 in volume II.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sita Ram Dube
Dr. Sita Ram Dubey (b. 1-9-1956) have obtained his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. ICHR’s (New Delhi) Post Doctoral fellowship awarded on ‘An Archaeological Study of Buddhist Centres of North India with special reference to the development of Buddhist order’. Specialization: (i) Society and Religion (with special reference to the early Buddhist religion and society), (ii) palaeography, (iii) Epigraphy and (iv) Numismatics.
