The present book is based on a study undertaken to investigate the perceptions of the people on climate change and the adaptive strategies as perceived by them in case of such an eventuality.

This micro level study was designed specifically to:

Document the people’s perception on climate change;

Understand the adaptation options that the community perceives;

Document the changes in both wild and domesticated biodiversity that is perceived by the people to be affected by climate change;

Investigate the possible coping role of the local resources such as forests and biodiversity in case of any climate-change related eventuality, and

Assess the existing institutional capacities to cope up with the eventualities and suggest effective institutional mechanism for the future.

The possible impacts of climate change in the study area were analyzed and the study focused on such natural disasters as drought, flash floods, increased temperature, erratic rainfall which are experienced at these low/mid-elevation zones of Himalaya/sub-Himalaya region.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brajesh K. Tiwari

Dr. B.K. Tiwari is working as Professor and Head, Department of Environmental Studies, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, India. He is also Head of Regional Centre, National Afforestation and Eco-development Board (RCNAEB), established by Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, at NEHU, Shillong, in the capacity of its Coordinator. He has published more than hundred research papers and three books in the field of forestry, environment and natural resource management.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kailash C Malhotra

Kailash C. Malhotra, an anthropologist and human ecologist has taught in Pune University and Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.  He has carried out extensive research on anthropological and ecological dimensions among tribals, dalits, nomads and village communities in different parts of the country.  He has authored over 20 books/monographs and has published over 350 research articles in Indian and foreign journals.  He is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.  He was President of Indian Society of Human Genetics.  He has served as a member or chairman on various committees of Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Planning Commission, etc. 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Saroj K. Barik

Saroj Kanta Barik is Professor of Ecology with Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany at North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. He is an accomplished ecologist with twenty five years of research experience in the field of Ecology and Natural Resources Management. He leads a strong group of researchers at NEHU pursuing frontline research in such diverse areas as ecosystem structure and function, ecological modeling. Population and molecular ecology, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and impact of climate change on species and ecosystems.
