Microbiology and biotechnology are the two important practical oriented subjects in the biology curriculum. Observation, study and experimentation are the basic needs for these subjects. Prof. P.T. Kalaichelvan, based on his experience of over two decades has made an excellent effort to bring out this volume on basic experiments that are required to be carried out by all students who study these subjects. Experiments in microbiology include counting of microbes, identification of bacteria, culturing and isolation of microbes, enzyme production and immobilization techniques. Isolation of genomic DNA of prokaryotes and eukaryotes, isolation of plasmids, transformation in E. coli, isolation of bacteriophages, ELISA technique, electrophoretic technique, Western blotting protocol, preparation of protoplasts and micropropagationm are the experiments for biotechnology.
