The book is an insightful study of the militancy in Pakistan and Afghanistan, delving into its background that can be traced to Russia’s perpetual interest in the Central Asian region and Afghanistan and the ‘Great Game’ between the British imperialists and Russia in the nineteenth century to acquire hegemony over the region. It begins with a detailed history of Afghanistan. Examining the implications of continual interference by the world powers in Afghanistan at different times, the author, Syed Viqar Salahuddin discusses the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the ethnic groups in the country, the ‘Talibanisation’ of Pakistan, and the militant groups in Afghanistan and their leaders. He includes a survey of Pakistan’s tribal belt and its affinity with bordering parts of eastern Afghanistan. He examines the NATO war in Afghanistan and the violence that has ensued, giving attention to the US’ Afghan policy.
