From the Preface: The history of literature in the Modern period in Europe begins with the age of enlightenment and the conclusion of the Baroque Period in the eighteenth century, succeeding the renaissance and early modern periods. In the classical literary cultures outside of Europe, the Modern Period begins later, in Ottoman Turkey with the Tanzimat Reforms (1820s), in Qajar Persia under Nasser al-Din Shah (1830s), in India with the end of the Mughal era and the establishment of the British Raj (1850s), in Japan with the Meiji Restoration (1860s), in China with the New Culture Movement (1910s).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bhupal Singh

Dr. Bhupal Singh has had a brilliant academic record. He earned his M.A. (English & History) from Kanpur University and started his career a Lecturer of English with UP Higher Education Service. He also took his M.Lit. from CIEFL, Hyderabad. He was awarded Ph.D. in English from Gorakhpur University. A seasoned teacher having a teaching career of over two and a half decades he taught English in various Govt. PG Colleges in UP and retired as Principal a few years back. Dr. Singh has many publications to his credit. His recent book viz. Victorian English Literature was widely acclaimed.
