The purpose of this book is to motivate the students to organize their thoughts and prepare them for solving problems in the vital areas of Modern Physics and Solid State Physics.

Each chapter begins with a quick review of the basic concepts of the topics and also, a brief discussion of the equations and formulae that are to be used for solving the problems. Examples and illustrations are provided then and there to expedite the learning process and the working knowledge.

About 700 problems have been treated in total; three hundred problems have been worked out providing the required details. Answers for the other four hundred problems have been provided at the end of the book. ABOUT THE AUTHOR S O Pillai

S.O. Pillai is a retired Professor from the Department of Physics, Materials, Science Division, Anna University, Chennai. His deep involvement and constant efforts in establishing the Materials Science laboratories, framing syllabi and introducing new curriculum for starting three postgraduate courses in the Department of Physics were gratefully acknowledged by the management of Anna University. He guided many M.Sc and M.Phil. candidates in their projects and two of them earned their Ph. D. degree. Dr Pillai has about 45 research papers, and he has authored 8 textbooks in physics for students of different levels. Dr. Pillai's spiritual teaching of this subject in the classroom with utmost care and dedication, his forceful instructions in the laboratory classes and the feedback from his students grading him a good teacher helped the management of Anna University to recommend him for Dr. Radhakrishnan Best Teacher Award. He received the award for the year 1990.
