ABOUT THE AUTHOR Arundhati Banerji

Dr. Arundhati Banerji now a Deputy Superintending Archaeologist, joined the Archaeological Survey of India, for Post-graduate training in Archaeology (1972-73). Ever since she takes active interest and participation in all the branches of archaeology. Thought her keenness in the field of Epigraphy and Numismatics of early period, made her to pursue further studies in archaeology, she studied numerous antiquities preserved in different Museums and Central Antiquities Collection of the Survey. Her long association with the Survey, enabled her to study the stylistic evolution of various art forms particularly the terracottas. She was awarded Ph.D. (1990) for her work Terracotta Art of Northern and Western India from c. 2000-e00 B.C. Besides many research papers, she has also contributed articles for “An Encyclopaedia of Indian Archaeology (ed.) A. Ghosh. At present, she is assiduously working for a monograph Terracotta Art of India on which she has already contributed widely in many Research Journals. She has also traveled abroad in connection with the Festival of India, Paris.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR B R Mani

Dr. Buddha Rashmi Mani, born 17 April 1955 (Gunhill, Mussoorie) in a family of patriots, academicians, administrators, is presently Director (Archaeology) in the Archaeological Survey of India, Janpath, New Delhi. he has had a meritorious academic record from High School to the University, always standing first class first. He got his Master's degree in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology from Banaras Hindu University in 1976 and Ph.D. in 1980 on 'Life in the Kushan Age'. He taught the subject in B.H.U. and at Central Institute of Tibetan Higher Studies, Sarnath in between 1978 and 1984 after which he joined the Archaeological Survey of India where he worked in various capacities of Group 'A' service in different circles and branches and directed more than a dozen significant archaeological excavations, such as at Lolkot, Salimgarh fort, Sankisa, Siswania, Kanishkapura, Ambaran and Ayodhya and also conserved a number of monuments in Goa, Maharashtra, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. He has been Director of the Institute of Archaeology (ASI), New Delhi. he has widely travelled and has represented the country in international conferences in Male, Tehran, Leicester, London etc. and has contributed two books, 'The Kushan Civilization' and 'Delhi: Threshold of the Orient' alongwith more than 100 research papers published in national and international journals.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR C. Dorje

C. Dorje (b. 1953) did his M.A. and M.Phil. degrees in History and PG Diploma in Archaeology.  He joined ASI as Deputy Superintending Archaeologist in 1979 and presently working as Director.  He has worked in the different fields in the ASI and has contributed number of articles and research papers and is also the co-author of the book-Historical Documents from Western Trans-Himalaya: Lahul, Zanskar and Ladakh (1996) and Kumbhalgarh: The Pride of Maharanas of Mewar (in press) and co-editors of Indian Archaeology 1995-95: A Review (2000) and Inventory of Monuments and Sites of National Importance, Vol. I: Part-I: Srinagar (1998).  He was also in the team deputed to Cambodia for preparation of Report on Ta Prohm temple complex.  He also participated in the Azad Hind Expedition (1995-96) as a representative of Department of Culture, Govt. of India.
