ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lakshmi Subrahmanyam

Lakshmi Subrahmanyam teaches history at the Department of History in Calcutta University. She is the author of a monograph entitled Indigenous Capital and Imperial Expansion: Bombay, Surat and the West Coast, New Delhi, 1996, of several article and has edited a collection of essays in honour of Ashin Dasgupta with Rudrangshu Mukherji. Her lastest monograph on Medieval Seafarers is in press.
