First published in 1953, W. Montgomery Watt’s Muhammad at Mecca was written in response to the need for a fresh perspective on the life of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) set in a fuller historical context. Traditional sources are handled with great care by the author as well as the Qur’an as a principal source. New data and the interpretations of more recent scholars are examined and the importance of socio-political and economic factors are given due consideration. However, it is the author’s view that these factors alone do not determine the course of events and that a strictly academic approach is not enough. This biography will particularly appeal to the modern reader and to the students of Islam.
