A detailed study of the various sources which helps musicologists to reconstruct the history of music is made in this volume. The colossal efforts were the results of the author’s doctoral thesis. The various chapters deal with the music of the pre-historic period including Indus and Harappa civilizations. ABOUT THE AUTHOR V. Premalatha

Dr. V. Premalatha was a U.G.C. Fellow at the Music department of the Madras University and was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1964 for her thesis on ‘Sources which provide materials for the construction of a detailed history of Indian Music.” Dr. T.N. Ramachandran, the former Joint Director General of Archaeology and Prof. P. Sambamoorthy supervised her thesis. She has worked in various capacities like Pool Officer in CSIR, Member of the faculty of the Music Department of Delhi University. Currently she is the Principal of the College of Music, Madurai University, Madurai, Tamilnadu. She has been teaching music and musicology at both the Graduate and Post-Graduate levels besides giving guidance to several Ph.D. students. Her book Tyagesar Karavanji published by theTanjore Saraswathy Mahal Library has been widely acclaimed by everyone. She has published several research papers in prestigious journals and has attended several seminars and conferences. Another field of her interest is Choreography for Dance-Dramas.
