The work is an attempt to highlight certain aspects of the social and Cultural and political life of Mappila Muslims of Malabar in the nineteenth century and the first quarter of twentieth with emphasis on the role of religious ideology and leadership in moulding the societal structure and cultural pattern. The work specifically attempts to study the Mappila attitudes in ther totality comprehrnding the social and political conditions of the period. It also reveals new dimensions of the subject by assessing and incorporating the attitudes of divines, scholars, leaders and the rulers; for this has not so far received rigorous historical scrutiny and analysis. Also attempts has been made to explain ambiguities and to remove certain misgivings and suspicions regarding Mappiia reactiond towards the British rule.
