This is the tenth volume of the Annual Security Series. The aim of the series is to bring into focus contemporary issues which have an overarching bearing on national security. The Annual Security Lecture 2007 dealt with: "India’s Water Relations with Her Neighbours". The speaker, Professor Ramaswamy R. Iyer, presented a broad survey covering a large area, a kind of tour d’horizon regarding inter-country water issues in South Asia, relations with China, and prospects for regional cooperation. The theme of the National Security Seminar 2007 was: "Defence Forces and Society"–a perennially relevant topic which has increased importance in the context of the commitments that the Defence Forces are facing, and likely to face in the years to come; the changes that have come about in the nature of conflict; the role of the Defence Forces, the changes in society and the aspirations of the people of India that have come up in the last ten years, after liberalisation and globalisation. The discussions also took stock of the role of Veterans in nation building and the role of the media, its impact on society’s perception about the Defence Forces and the impact of its reporting on the ethos of the Defence Forces, social, economic and cultural changes that have taken place in the society and how these have impacted on the Defence Forces.
