It is sobering to realize that the majority of conflicts and wars since World War II have been fought over the issue of ethnicity rather tan between nation states, with religious identity being a key determiner of ethnicity. Persecution and intolerance against Christians is on the rise in South Asia. Hindu nationalism in India, Buddhist resurgence in Sri Lanka and Islamic fundamentalism in Pakistan are on the increase. At such a critical time there is need for a clear and confident Christian identity and witness in South Asia. With all the current talk on globalization it is surprising that in the discussion little attention is paid to the issue of ethnicity and religious identity. It is hoped that this book might contribute to correcting that omission. This book is the result of the 10th Centre for Mission Studies Consultation which was held at Union Biblical Seminary, Pune, India from 15th-17th January, 2004. Papers exploring and responding to Hindu nationalism are included by experts such as Robert Frykenber, T K Oommen, Lalsangkima Pachuau, Plamthodathil S Jacob, Jesudas M Athyal, Arthur Jeyakumr and Sebastian C H Kim.
