The importance of English in India as a medium of instruction and communication is growing fast since the post-colonial era. The English-speaking population in India today exceeds the number of people speaking English in Britain. Twenty-five essays that constitute this volume throw3 light on various aspects of English language teaching, functional English for specific purposes, material production and syllabus design for Indian students, linguistic theories and their application in the pronunciation of English, interpersonal skills, personality development and the importance of language teaching in technical education. In the age of globalization and liberalization, English is the only lingua- franca for the entire world. Still, learning of English as a second language poses a number of difficulties for both teachers and learners. However, since the use of language is variegated, it is only when a good command of the language has been achieved, the learner can proceed with his linguistic adroitness. Teachers and students of English Language Teaching and researchers in this field will find this book extremely valuable during planning, selection, grading and presentation.
