ABOUT THE AUTHOR Colonel P.K. Gautam

Colonel P.K. Gautam was commissioned in the regiment of artillery in December 1970. he was a gun position officer with 24 Medium regiment in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war in Bangladesh and also an observation post officer with the infantry. He is a graduate of the defence services Staff Colleges and the Long Gunnery Staff Course. He commanded a field regiment and was a staff officer dealing with logistics with an infantry division in Ladakh responsible for Kargil and Siachen sectors. He took premature retirement in 200 to pursue a second career devoted to security and strategic studies. He has authored Envr0nmental security (2003) and National security: A Primer (2004) and has contributed chapters to three books on topics related to the environment. Since August 2005 he is a research fellow at the Institute for defence studies and Analyses, New Delhi. His experience and insights of the 1971 war is the central theme of this book.
