The first units deals with that apart from optical fiber, an optical transmission system would need, in a practical system, two other key elements, namely, the transmitter and receiver which had been already developed independently.
In order to send a light signal through optical fiber, it is required to have a source that emits a bright directional signal. Also, since light signals are often in digital form (that is the information is conveyed in the form of series of light pulses), the light sources should e capable of being turned on band off quickly. The more rapid the modulation, the more would be the information conveyed in a given time.
