This is a sincere efforts to record the major ornamental plants raised in gardens and landscapes of today. The main classes of plants are described in the introductory chapter. The subsequent chapters list the plants in the order of their habitat. The information includes scientific name, common name and the family to which the belong, a brief description and ornamental features.

A comprehensive account of trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, creepers and taxonomic groups that share characteristics such as bulbous plants, cacti, succulents, bromeliads, ferns, and their allies, grasses, bamboos, sedges as well as ornamental water garden plants are given.

Flowering and foliage of gardens of the tropics and subtropics and the popular deciduous trees and coniferous trees of the temperate zone are dealt separately. Among shrubs, dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous flowering and foliage shrubs as well as temperate region species suited for the hilly regions of India are included.

Importance has been given to annual and perennial herbs grown in tropical and temperate regions. Climbers and creepers popularly grown in tropical gardens are listed. Among specialized plant groups, they are more commonly grown plants and those with outstanding ornamental features are selected. A brief account of planting and tips on their care and management are given.

The book includes around 250 colour photographs and an index of the scientific names and families.

The author has prepared this volume for the enlightened and keen enthusia to serve as guide for identifying garden plants and for selecting ornamentals to suit different locations under varied climatic conditions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K V Peter

Prof. K.V. Peter , Ph.D, is Former VC of KAU in Trichur, India and Coordinator of the Department of Biotechnology (GOI) funded projects on plantation crops and spices. Prof. Peter is a horticulturist, a plant breeder and an acknowledged research manager. He is the former Director for the Indian Institute of Spices Research, Calicut (ICAR) and former Professor and Director of Research, KAU. Professor Peter is the editor of seven books and author or co-author of thirteen books/bulletins and 132 research papers. The ICAR conferred on Prof. Peter the Rafi Ahamed Kidwai Prize, the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences awarded the Recognition Award 1999 for contributions to crop improvement, and the University of Agricultural Sciences conferred the M.H. Marygowda Award for being the Best Horticultural Scientist. Prof. Peter is the Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sabina George Thekkayam

Dr. Sabina George T. is a postgraduate with a Ph.D in Horticulture from the Kerala Agricultural University. She is a faculty member of the Kerala Agricultural University from 1980 onwards and is currently a Professor in the discipline of Horticulture. Involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in Horticulture for the past 17 years, she has specialized in Ornamental gardening, Landscaping, Floriculture and in the Propagation and Nursery Techniques of flower crops. Her subject area of interest and major research contributions are in tropical ornamentals, specifically orchids, anthuriums and foliage aroids. She is actively involved in the extension and training activities of her parent university. An ardent horticulturist and a nature lover, her knowledge of tropical ornamentals and discerning view of their decorative value are reflected in the extensive coverage of plants and their descriptions provided in these pages.
