There are innumerable musical scales available through mathematical process of permutation and combination of tones but only a few thousands of them are bestowed with names and among these, many have become obsolete. Only a few are handed down from generation to generation.
The present author took great pains to compile an exhaustive survey of scales, which has not been doing so far in South Indian Scales by giving the names of the scales in alphabetical order, the treatises which mention the name of the concerned scale and the creator's name of the new scales, which are recently introduced into the music of South India. Long back, he produced the work under the same name, giving the scales numbering more than 3000. The author got access to many hand-written manuscripts, which contain raga-scales and the result is the present edition of "Palai Azhi", containing about 3800 raga scales.
The book will certainly be useful for students of music, musicians and musicologists and also to listeners of music, as a guide to know about the particulars of the scale. Undoubtedly, this is a valuable contribution to the musical field.
