Parliamentary democracy is proved as the most desirable form of governance all over the world. Parliaments have developed and experienced many techniques to provide good governance by securing transparency and accountability but the most prominent and effective tool has been the Committee system. Parliamentary Committees are essential components of any legislature providing various supports in the discharge of responsibilities of the legislature. The committee system ensures smooth functioning of the legislature by building consensus on critical issues and examing issues in greater details, which the legislature is not able to do due to paucity of time and its large size. An attempts has been made in this book to analyse the comparison of two parliamentary Committee systems of India, the largest and Britain, the oldest democracy representating two different worlds sharing common evolution and similar political contexts. This book also focuses the impact and effectiveness of the Committee system in both British and Indian Parliament.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nivedita Giri

Nivedita Giri (b. 1971) completed M. Phil and Ph.D. from Centre for American and West European Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Presently working as a Research Associate with Schumacher Centre, Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi. She had worked as a Lecturer in Political Science in Mahila Mahavidyalaya Champua, Keonjhar, Orissa and she has also worked in the variuos project of KVIC, BPR & D, New Delhi. She has published many articles in the leading research journals.
