The present book is the outcome of an extensive collection and critical investigation of more than 5,000 parmelioid specimens preserved in different herbaria of India, representing all the phytogeographic regions of the country. A detailed study of this group, shows greatest diversity of commonly growing lichens in India. Till date there has not been any comprehensive account on the parmelioid lichens in India is so far available. Keeping this in view the authors have tried to fulfil this lacunae by bringing out the book "Parmelioid lichens in India". The present work includes systematic account of 192 species belonging to 22 genera with coloured photographs, scanned pictures of TLC plates for secondary metabolites of each species, current nomenclature, key to the genera and species. For each species, basionym, synonyms, information on type collection, detail description, chemistry, remarks, variation, habitat and altitudinal distribution within and outside India, along with maps are provided. Glossary of botanical names and terms used in the text are also provided. The important morphological characters to delimit genera and species along with scientific illustrations and scanning electron microscopic pictures are given in the general account. The conservation status of parmelioid lichens is also discussed. Extinct, endangered, vulnerable and endemic taxa are also listed. Eight localities are proposed as "Lichen sanctuaries" for the country owing to their luxuriant parmelioid flora. It is hoped that the present work covering various aspects of the parmelioid lichens will be of immense interest to students, scientists, teachers and other interested to peruse research particularly on the parmelioid lichens in India and world in general.
