The present work is outcome of a search for fresh contemporary evidence about the life and conditions in the Sultanate of Delhi during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Besides the contemporary Perso-Arabic works, the literary works produced under the patronage of the Sultans of Delhi and nobles also contain information about important institutions and scientific inventions and instruments that found their way into India along with the immigrants from Central Asia and the Middle East. In view of the paucity of source-material on the life and culture in the known political histories of the period, fresh historical information contained in the contemporary Perso-Arabic sources, hitherto unknown or neglected has been represented in this work in the translation with comments. The work will not only enlarge the understanding of the scholars, interested in the history and culture of India but also open new vistas for further research.
