Photographing India

The volume presents a rare collection of photographs taken by internationally acclaimed photographer Sunil Janah between the late 1930s and the late 1970s in India. A historically significant book, the photographs capture aspects of pre- and post-independence India—the freedom movement, the partition of the Indian subcontinent, famines, riots, peasant and social movements, and important political figures, artists, writers and other eminent personalities as well as ordinary people. The photographs are preceded by commentaries that provide valuable insights into Indian history, the social and cultural life of the country, and the journey of the photographer’s development as an artist. The photographer thus introduces the photographs and the history behind the people and events they feature and presents interesting anecdotes that add to the richness of the images. The volume has close to 400 photographs that showcase India over the decades, combining the photographer’s personal history with the evolution of a nation.
