A plant disease is an abnormal condition of a plant that impairs bodily functions, associated with specific symptoms and signs. It may be caused by external factors, such as invading organisms, or it may be caused by internal dysfunctions, such as autoimmune diseases. Organisms that cause infectious disease include fungi, oomycetes, bacteria, viruses, viroids, virus-like organisms phytoplasmas, protozoa, nematodes and parasitic plants. Not included are insects, mites, vertebrate or other pests that affect plant health by consumption of plant tissues.

This book teaches basic plant and microbial biology while explaining plant diseases. Written for use as a general biology course, its fascinating historical approach will pique the interest of the undergraduate student. Plant pathology instructors will find the text appropriate for students who require a less detailed introduction to plant diseases. It is suitable as an independent text or as supplemental reading.
