This anthology contains 4 plays by Chekhov. These are The Sea Gull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard. Chekhov first attained celebrity status as a playwright with ‘The Seagull'(1895), which was first produced in Petersburg, but was subsequently brilliantly directed by Stanislavsky for the Moscow Art Theatre. Uncle Vanya (1900), ‘Three Sisters (1901), and the most famous of Chekhov’s plays, The Cherry Orchard (1904), followed in quick succession. In fact, it was the production of Chekhov’s plays that established the Moscow Art Theatre’s reputation. A successful blend of naturalism and symbolism give Chekhov’s plays a perennial appeal — the proof of which is the still popular productions of Chekhov in many languages of the world. ‘The Cherry Orchard’ was produced in Bengali (Manjari, Amer Manjari) by the Nandikar theatre group in Calcutta, and proved to be enormously popular among theatre-lovers. All four plays are included in this volume.
