Plantation forestry is an age old practice as people use to plant trees on their farm lands and near their houses. There were tree festivals like Shabhangika, Vanmahotava in Gupta period. However, the expanse of these plantations were less. With the advent of Industrialization, expanding population base and degradation of forest there is a urgent need to establish large scale plantations which on one hand fulfill the need of industries, fuel, fodder and timber requirement of people and on the other provide economic and environmental safety. In India, generally degraded lands are spared for forest related activities. These degraded lands suffers from different problems like less soil depth, grazing pressure, poor nutrient, may be saline-alkaline, inaccessibility, undulating, rocky so on — Establishing trees on these lands is a challenging task and requires skill and planning. In light of failure of many plantation programs in past, it is imperative that the manpower is trained for plantation programs to achieve good results in field. This promoted the authors to bring out this manuscript which can help as a guide to forests, researcher and students. The book would be of interest to those who are concerned with land use in forest and soil conservation, agriculture and forest colleges ad universities. There are total eight chapters; Chapters first introduces plantation forestry as a science and spells the need and origin of large scale plantation. Second and third chapters are devoted to equipments and techniques used in plantation forestry. Rest of the chapters deals with management, planning, impact, energy relation of plantation and protection of plantation forestry.
