In the present work Prehistoric and Historic Archaeology of Gujarat, Dr. Sankalia has presented a critical review of the new discoveries in the prehistoric, proto-historic and historic archaeology of Gujarat since 1947 to the present day. The work is mainly based on his own explorations, for example at Madasa on the Banas. It is an exhaustive study of the Early Stone Age tools, rock-paintings, Buddhist stupas and images as well as temples, their architecture and iconography, and images of Gujarat from c. AD 200 to AD 1300. A special feature of the book is the critical study of the place and personal names from inscriptions of Gujarat. The study shows how Gujarat Mandala was formed in the ninth century, and thus regarded as a separate cultural province. It has taken nearly one thousand years for India to be reorganized into linguistic provinces. The book is sufficiently provided with line diagrams and half-tone illustrations.
