The book deals with the primary education in Delhi” Slums in relation to access and its utilization. The authors have examined the issues involved in the access and utilization of primary education in Delhi Slums. Various issues covered in this study are: (I) Inadequate access (ii) Inadequate policy support and commitment for universalisation of primary education (iii) Poor attention to quality at primary education level. (iv) Gender inequality in access to education, and (V) high rate of dropout and wastage. It emerges from the study that the caste, religion and place of origin has a very strong bearing on the level of development of education. The Muslims in general and Bihatis (Hindus & Muslis) in particular have been found to be less appreciative for education as compared to Bangalee migrants. The primary schools located near the slums despite enormous efforts put in by the pathetic condition. Shortage of teachers and lack of commitment among the teachers has been some of the glaring facts. The parents however were of the opinion that are curriculum followed in these schools is not suitable to the needs of the slums children. Therefore, the suggestion was made to re-design th4 curriculum while keeping in mind the cultural, caste and religion variations.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Anil K. Yadav

Dr. Anil K.Yadav is currently working as Chief at the Institute of Applied Manpower research, New Delhi. He is presently heading Social Concern Studies unit in the institute. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from M.S. University, Baroda and Ph.D. from Sardar Patel Institute of economic and social Research, Ahmedabad (Gujarat University, Ahmedabad). He has previously served as a Research Associate at Indian Institute of management, Ahmedabad, Consultant at National Council of Applied economic research, New Delhi. Assistant Professor at Institute for Studies in Industrial Development (ISID) Delhi, Associate professor at Apeejay Institute of Management, Delhi, and other good institute like Institute of economic Growth, Delhi and Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad, etc. He had to his credit many research articles published in professional journals in India. He is also an author and co-author of more than a dozen research reports. He has also got three books viz.,’ The Structural Changes in Indian economy: A Comparative Analysis; School Education in India: Position and Placement prospects of teachers 1999-2011 and educational Development Index in India: An International-state Perspective’ to his credit. His area of specialization includes Development economics, international Economics, manpower Planning and Econometrics, etc.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Madhu Srivastava

Mrs. Madhu Srivastava is presently working as Joint Chief with Institute of Applied Manpower research, Delhi. She is a post-graduate in Mathematics from university of Delhi. In the Institute, she is shouldering multiple responsibilities as Head of Employment & Unemployment Studies unit. She has been working in has contributed substantially in the areas of Manpower Planning, Human resources Development, educational Planning, Employment Planning and Quantitative Techniques. Apart from her contribution in these research areas, she has also been actively involved for over a decade in planning and executing the national and international training programmes organized by the Institute. She has got one book entitled “Educational Development Index in India- An International-State Perspective” to her credit.
