Health is a basic need along with food, shelter and education. The health status of a population is now considered an important indicator of development and health is increasingly being seen as a development issue rather than just medical one. Health interventions can lead to economic growth and reduce inequity in developing countries. Health care can be divided into a number of different branches. Conventionally, these include hospital care, primary care and public health. Public health is probably the most important issue for the health of population. Primary care is the main focus of medical care in practice. Public health includes not only preventive medicine but also several other areas not necessarily linked to conventional health services including housing, water supplies, sewerage and food hygiene. In spite of significant improvement in the health status, many disparities and distortions remain. Progress has been uneven and has been confined to more advanced regions. This book will be useful for policy makers, scholars, students of public administration and sociology and all those connected with health care delivery system.
