"Critical care is a growing speciality in India and other developing countries. This second edition, which has been extensively revised and updated, incorporates current advances and guidelines in the management of various critical illnesses. The book discusses in depth various aspects of critical care medicine including the philosophy and ethics of critical care, imaging techniques, clinical presentation, basic physiopathology, and the management of life-threatening illnesses involving various organ systems of the body. It also deals with critical care in trauma, following open-heart surgery, in poisonings and in pediatric emergencies. The new edition includes a very relevant chapter on critical care in various emergencies during pregnancy and following delivery. The critical care of fulminant tropical infections, particularly when complicated by multiple organ dysfunction has been of special interest to the author. His emphasis and reasoned comments on this subject will be of interest to all doctors specializing in infectious diseases and critical care medicine. Many critical care units in developing countries lack in sophisticated technology and expertise. The concept of critical care under these circumstances and management strategies of some life-threatening situations when ideal conditions for care are not possible, have been discussed, thereby enhancing the value of the book."
