In the Early 20-century, India under the British crown faced many socio-economic, administrative and political problems. At that time India was the greatest customer of England was the greatest customer of England and employed the best English intellect and manhood. This study by S.M. Mitra, a loyal Indian by conviction mainly focuses on the success of British India administration which has been little less than marvelous, who ruled over this vast land as enthusiastic crusaders. Though written about a century ago these learned essays are still very useful, which provide a background of happenings in British India and the native system of Government with the methods adopted by the British and scope for great improvements. There were however fears and doubts of injustice and widespread oppression among people. Mitra has however thought fit to bring a few salient facts of British administration in India to the notice of the British Public. Some of his articles on Drink, Asia and Imperial Commerce, Famines etc., are still realistic and important. Though, these writings are of a particular period but of great historical value even today to know the mechanism of British Indian administration and the British policy towards Indian subject in the light of various problems of the day.
