Women constitute nearly one-half of the present population of the country. They are expected, like their counterparts in developed countries, to play significant role in the development and progress of the national economy. Unfortunately very little attention has been paid on women’s studies. As a social group and middle class working women is an emerging Phenomenon. The study conducted by the author and as outlined in the present volume highlights the problem of working middle class urban women in historical perspective. After analysing in detail the pattern and development of working women as a social group. The author highlights their problem of maintaining and looking after their place of work. In the framework of these broad parameters, the author analyses the government policies and programmes, locates the bottlenecks in policies and finally provides some meaningful suggestions which may help the policy planners and administrators. The book is likely to prove highly useful to the students of urban sociology, academicians, administrators, policy planners and also general readers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A D Mishra

Anil Dutta Mishra (b. 1965) did his M.A. and M. Phil. in Political Science from the University of Delhi in 1988 and 1991 respectively. He is presently serving as Lecturer in the Department of Non-violence and Peace Research, Jain Vishwa Bharati, Ladnun (Rajasthan). Author of nearly a dozen Research papers, published in leading journals of the country, he has participated in a number of Seminars and Conferences both at National and International level. He is a member of leading academic organisations. His areas of specialization are Women’s Studies, Non-Violence, District Administration and Indian Political System. His doctoral research on Decentralized Planning is nearing completion.
