Teaching is considered as one of the oldest profession as well as a nobel profession. Every teacher is expected to be an ideal man imbued with a high moral character. Unfortunately, however, the teachers have fallen victim to a popular criticism in regard to their professional commitment. In popular media it is complaint that the missionary character of their profession is slowly eroding. But however this is true? No body seems to have done a pioneer research work on the theme of Teacher’s Professional Commitment in secondary education in India. She has tried to gague the extent, variation and distribution of professional commitment among teachers in secondary education and has tried to compare the degree of commitment among teachers with their social and academic characteristics. She has also tried to explore the ways and means of fostering commitment among teachers. The situation of teachers’ commitment has been dealt with a broader perspective of prevalent theoretical models and paradigms related to it. Amrita Maheshwari concludes by offering interesting and instructing results regarding teachers’ professional commitment. Her work is so wide in ti coverage that it is bound to be used as reference manual by fulfill researchers in the field of commitment –research in education.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Amrita Maheshwari

Dr. Amrita Maheshwari did M>Sc. (Botany) in 1994, M.Ed. (1997) from Dayalbagh Educational Institute (Deemed University), Agra. She has a record of brilliant educational career and won many Academic laurels and career and won many Academic laurels and Awards-University topper in M.Ed., B.Ed., M.Sc., B.Sc. (Hon.), B.Sc. and awarded gold medal and Certificate from Directorate of U.P. Higher Education, Allahabad. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Education in 2002, she has also qualified UGC test for lectureship for Indian Universities. Amrita has participated in National Seminars and Workshop. She has also published about a dozen papers in various reputed natio9nal and international journals and magazines. She has started her professional career as a lecturer and taught B.Sc./ M.Sc. (H.Sc.) from 1999 to 2003 at G.D.M. Girls (P.G.) College, Modi Nagar. She has been teaching undergraduate classes in Education for the last five years and has earned a distinction of being a dedicated and committed teacher both from her students and colleagues. Currently, Amrita Maheshwari is working a Head of Department of Faculty of Education in SRM-Institute of Management and Technology, Modi Nagar, Ghaziabad (North Campus of SRM-Ist; Deemed University, Chennai). She is also an Academic Counsellor for B.Ed. Distance Education Programme of IGNOU, New Delhi.
