The present book deals with the entire spectrum of the problem of environmental degradation in general, and burning problem of environmental hazardous due to non-seriousness of the policy planners in India in particular. Author has taken the Sardar Sarovar Project as an instance for classifying policy errors which has delayed implementation of the project. The book has emphasised both the role of NGOs in creating environmental consciousness as well as quest for NGOs to remove errors in making policies regarding environmental protection. For arguing a quest of NGOs, different people’s movements based on environmental protection–like Chipko movement in Gharwal region, Opiko movement in Kerala and Narmada Bachao Andolan in Gujarat have been studied. In the end, the book describes a need for a national policy of people’s participation in our development programmes. The author takes a balanced view on different issues.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Satish Kumar

Satish Kumar is a former Professor of Diplomacy, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and had been at the School since 1961. In 1978, he spent a year as a Visiting Fellow under the Senior Fulbright Scheme at the School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University, Washington DC, and Institute of International Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Professor Satish Kumar was a Visiting Professor at the University of Torino, Italy, in 1990. He held the India Chair at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, Tashkent, in 1996-98, and the MEA Chair at the United Service Institution of India, New Delhi, in 1998-99. In addition, he has delivered several special lectures at the universities of illnois, Columbia, Heidelberg, Geneva, Malta, London and Guanzhou.
